I know I’ve complained about Quickbooks before, but who knew I could actually end up hating the software even more after today?!
Prior to my bookkeeper’s visit I tried to load in all of the last quarter’s transactions, which should have only taken me an hour. Upon booting up Quickbooks, it said there was an update that I needed to download, and so I did. Big mistake! Not only did it take a really long time to update, it then surprised me with a notification letting me know that because I had upgraded my software, I would need to back up my old files on a shared drive, otherwise I would not be able to proceed with using the new software. At the risk of doing something really stupid, I panicked and just waited for my bookkeeper to arrive. Luckily she was a whiz at Quickbooks! She breezed through the reconcilation, found all the 1099-eligible vendor entries that I accidentally mislabeled, and then plowed through tax form documentation while I watched in awe. And she still finished earlier than I projected. At the end of our meeting she and I agreed to meet once a month so I could minimize my Quickbooks-induced migranes. She is so great!
This afternoon I filled out a business permit request for the City of Kirkland. The fee for a permit can range from $50-$100 depending on gross revenue, which was actually higher than I expected. It’s Kirkland for god’s sake. But overall this permit fee will be less expensive than running my business from downtown Seattle, where the fees were $90/year for the license + $100/year for the bogus International District beautification fee. I even get a $38 refund from my insurance company for operating in Kirkland instead of Seattle. I can buy a year’s worth of post-its with that rebate!
I also spoke to my manufacturer today, and he swears his workload was much better this month. He said the briefcases will go into production in the latter half of January, and the tote bags will follow the week after. I sure hope he keeps his word this time.
Time to wind down. Too bad I can’t have wine. Booo!
